初めてTP&HBと一緒に過ごしたのは1986年でした。僕が(父の)ツアーに同行したのはそれが最初ではありませんが、本当に興奮したのは初めてでした。僕は既に彼らの大ファンで、ステージの袖から全てを見逃さないようにしようという大計画を持っていました。あの夏は僕に多大な影響を与えました。Tomの2人の娘さんと一緒に座りながら、こう考えたのを思い出します。「君達のお父さんはTom Pettyなんだよ！スゴイよ！それってすごく不思議だよ！」
Tomが登場するまで、多くのシンガー・ソングライターが「新しいDylan」というレッテルにもがいてきました。それは多くの人達をダメにしました。それを乗り越えるには他の誰もが持っていない視点を見せるしかありませんでしたが、多くの人たちはそうしませんでした。しかし、Tomの視点はあまりにも強力で、僕が登場した頃には僕が「新しいPetty」と呼ばれるようになっていました。
でも、これはかなり嬉しい意見です。僕が自分のグループを結成した時、僕はHeartbreakersのように編成しました。ギター2本に、ベース、ドラム、そして
（Hammond）B3/ピアノ。今、この編成は古臭いと言う人もいますが、僕がそう感じたことは一度もありません。僕にとって、それこそがロックンロールの始まりであると同時に、結局はそこに帰着するからです。加えたい音があればそのために充分な余裕があるし、これ以上(の演奏者)は決して必要ないからです。ロックにトレンドや流行りがあることは確かですが、実際はその正反対だということをTP&HBは教えてくれました。ロックとは時代を超越したものなのです。
TP&HBは1976年に最初のレコードを創りました。それはみんなが「ロックンロールは死んだ」なんて言ってた頃の話です。今でもそれを言う人はいて、ラジオを聴いたり音楽チャンネルを見れば確かにそう感じるかもしれません。でも、それはありえません。Heartbreakersがスタジオにいる限りは。ロックは元気だ、ということを信じられるのですから。
彼らはアメリカの最も偉大なロック・グループの一つです。彼らは(伝統を)引継ぎ、長い間にわたり誇り高く持ち続け、それを成した後にはそこにいた分だけその音楽を強力にして(次の世代へ)受け渡していくのです。こんなことは願っても出来るものではありません。
Tomはあなたが忘れられないような曲を書いてきました。"American Girl"、"Refugee"、そして"Free
Fallin'"。でも、Tomのスゴイところは25年経った今でも、彼が次に書く曲こそが最も素晴らしい曲だろうということです。彼の曲全てには、Tom特有の魂が満ち溢れています。彼の最も印象的な一節はこんな感じです。
「Think of me what you will, I've got a little space to fill (自分は何ができるのかって考えてみるけど、選択の余地は僅かしかない)」
25年間レコードを創り続けてきた人から出てくる言葉にしては控えめですが、まさに私たち多くがこうしたいと願っているのではないでしょうか。
良いロックンロール・バンドはステージに上がり、言いたいことを言い、そして去っていきます。しかし、一番大切なことは彼らの持ち時間をどう満たすかなのです。TP&HBは、永遠に残る楽曲、そしていつまでも朽ちないレコードで、その時間を満たしました。彼らをロックンロールの殿堂に招くことができるのはとても光栄です。みなさん、Tom

The first time I spent time with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was in
1986. It was not the first time I had tagged along on tour, but it was
the first time I was really excited. I was already a huge fan and I had
big plans to watch every minute from the side of the stage. That summer
had a huge effect on me. I remember sitting with Tom's two daughters thinking,
"Your dad is Tom Petty!---That's so cool! That must be so weird!"
Before Tom came along a lot of singer/songwriters were stuck with the label,
"a new Dylan." And it ruined a lot of people. The only way to
overcome was to show you had a vision unlike anyone else. Most of them
didn't. But Tom's vision was so strong that by the time I came along I
got called "the new Petty."
But that's a fair rap. When I was putting my group together, I set it up
like the Heartbreakers. Two guitars, bass, drums, and a B3/piano player.
Today people call that lineup retro, but I never saw it that way. To me,
that's where rock and roll starts, and that's where it always gets back
to. There's plenty of room for whatever else you want to throw in, but
you never NEED more than that. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers made it
clear that while rock will have its trends and go through fads, it's really
about the opposite. It's about being timeless.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers made their first record in 1976. It was
another one of those times that people were saying that rock and roll was
dead. They say that today too, and if you listen to the radio or watch
the music channels, you might agree. But it can't be. Not if the Heartbreakers
are in the studio. You can believe that rock is doing fine.
They truly are one of the great American rock groups. They picked up the
torch and they've held it proudly for a long time and when they're done,
they'll pass the music along stronger for having been there. That's the
most anyone can hope to do.
Tom has written songs you will never forget. From "American Girl"
to "Refugee" to "Free Fallin'." And what is rare with
Petty is that after 25 years, his next song may be his best one yet. All
of his songs are bursting with Tom's unique spirit. One of his most inspiring
lines, "Think of me what you will, I've got a little space to fill."
While humbling, coming from a guy who's been making records for 25 years,
it is exactly what a lot of us are hoping to do.
A great rock & roll band comes on stage, says what it has to say, and
is gone. What matters most is how they fill the time they've got. Tom Petty
and the Heartbreakers have filled their time with songs that will last
forever and records that will never go out of style. It is my great pleasure
to welcome them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ladies and Gentlemen,
